Where is Sunset Country?
Sunset Country is located in the Northwest corner of Ontario, Canada. We are bordered to the south by Minnesota and to the west by Manitoba. Our eastern border is just west of Thunder Bay.
Where is Pickle Lake?
Pickle Lake is located at the end of Highway 599 about 300 km (180 miles) north of Ignace, Ontario. If you are driving from the U.S., you can either take the International Falls/Fort Frances border crossing or cross at Pigeon River. If you go through the International Falls/Fort Frances border, go east from Fort Frances on Highway 11 for approximately 30 km (18 miles), then head north on Highway 502. When you reach Highway 17, turn right onto Highway 17 and go east to Dinorwic and turn north on Highway 72 to Sioux Lookout, turn east on Highway 516 and then north on 599 to Pickle Lake. If you are crossing at Pigeon River, go north to Thunder Bay, then take Highway 17 west to Ignace. At Ignace take Highway 599 north for about 3 hours to Pickle Lake.
How do I get to Sunset Country?
Sunset Country is less than a day's drive from many US Midwest cities. All main highways and roads in Sunset Country are paved. From the United States, there are three border crossings - at International Falls, Minnesota, Baudette, Minnesota and at Pigeon River. If you are flying a major airline, you can fly into Winnipeg, Manitoba or Thunder Bay, Ontario. Mesaba Airlines (a Northwest Airlink affiliate) flies into International Falls, MN. Bearskin Airlines is a regional airline that flies to many communities in Sunset Country. Sioux Lookout is the closest town to Pickle that Bearskin Airlines will fly into. If you fly into an airport, you can rent a car or van to get to Pickle Lake.
Can I fly into Pickle Lake?
The Pickle Lake Airport does not have scheduled air services. If you are flying a private plane or charter, there is a 4,500 foot paved airstrip at Pickle Lake. Visit the CANPASS website for information on Canadian customs and immigration. North Star Air and Canada Direct fly charter flights from the U.S. Midwest & Ontario & Manitoba destinations. Wasaya Airways will fly into Pickle Lake from Thunder Bay and Sioux Lookout.
What are the speed limits in Ontario?
Speed limits are posted in kilometers. Speed limits on the main highways in the area usually 90 km/hour or 55 mph. Please follow the posted speed limits and watch for wildlife.
