Where is Sunset Country?

Sunset Country is located in the Northwest corner of Ontario, Canada. We are bordered to the south by Minnesota and to the west by Manitoba. Our eastern border is just west of Thunder Bay.

Where is Savant Lake?

Savant Lake is a small community located along Highway 599 in between Ignace and Pickle Lake. It is just west of Wabakimi Provincial Park. If you are driving from the U.S., you can either take the International Falls/Fort Frances border crossing or cross at Pigeon River. If you go through the International Falls/Fort Frances border, go east from Fort Frances on Highway 11 for approximately 30 km (18 miles), then head north on Highway 502. When you reach Highway 17, turn right onto Highway 17 and go east to Ignace. From Ignace, go north on Highway 599 for about 150 km (90 miles) to Savant Lake. An alternative route is to go to Dinorwic and turn north on Highway 72 to Sioux Lookout, then east on Highway 516 until you hit 599. Savant Lake will be just south of this intersection.

If you are crossing at Pigeon River, go north to Thunder Bay, then take Highway 17 west to Ignace. From Ignace, go north on Highway 599 for about 150 km (90 miles) to Savant Lake.

How do I get to Sunset Country?

Sunset Country is less than a day's drive from many US Midwest cities. There are three border crossings from Minnesota: Baudette, International Falls, and Pigeon River. All main highways and roads in Sunset Country are paved. If you are flying, you can fly into Winnipeg, MB, Thunder Bay, ON or International Falls, MN. From the airport, you can fly Bearskin Airlines into Sioux Lookout or you can rent a car or van or use a shuttle service. Savant Lake can also be accessed by Via Rail. Your tourist outfitter should be able to give you suggestions on the easiest way to Savant Lake from your home city.

Can I fly into Savant Lake?

There is no airport in Savant Lake. The closest airport is in Sioux Lookout. Bearskin Airlines has scheduled air services to the Sioux Lookout Airport with convenient connections to Air Canada, Porter, and WestJet.

What are the speed limits in Ontario?

Speed limits are posted in kilometers. Speed limits on the main highways in the area usually 90 km/hour or 55 mph. Please follow the posted speed limits and watch for wildlife.
