Duck Hunting in Northwestern Ontario

Hunt The Wild Rice Bays For Ducks

While the Sunset Country region isn't well known as a duck-hunting destination, those who've tried it keep coming back each year, and they try to keep it a secret. Sunset Country covers a huge geographic area, and good duck hunting can be found in larger bays with naturally growing wild rice. The rice forms an integral part of the migrating ducks' diet and gives them cover to rest in for the long journey ahead of them. Make sure you ask your outfitter for details on where they'll put you to hunt to give you a better chance of success. A variety of duck species fly our way every autumn.

Here you can hunt:

Early Fall (September)

  • Mallards
  • Wood Ducks
  • Blue-winged Teal

Late Fall (October)

  • Ringnecks
  • Bluebills
  • Goldeneyes
  • Buffleheads

Trophy Ducks

  • Hooded Mergansers
  • Green-winged Teal
  • Widgeon

Waiting for the ducks to land.
